David & Gill Elson Retirement

29th September 2011

David & Gill were due to retire after 30 years in the licensing trade on 3rd October, so on the previous Thursday many members gathered at the Gate Hangs Well, Carlton to say 'thank you and farewell'.

Chairman David gave a short speech, a precis of which appears below, and presented David & Gill with a framed 'Thank You' from the branch.

This is not a routine retirement. Tonight is a special occasion. David and Gill have been in the licensing trade for just over 30 years. It all began in the Sycamores in Burbage in 1981 and there in 1990 they were awarded Pub of the Month by Leicester CAMRA. They left the Sycamores in 1992 and , after a short sabbatical, went the Dixie in Market Bosworth in 1996. In 2000 they bought the Gate Hangs Well in Carlton, where they have been to this day.
CAMRA is not just about real ale: it is also about real pubs and real landlords. Pubs where you are made to feel welcome and where pride is taken in serving excellent beers. David and Gill have been a living example of this. The fact that this pub is the longest serving entrant in the GBG in our area and has also been awarded POTM in March 2008 says it all. It’s hard working running a public house. On Fridays we look forward to putting our feet up at the weekend; David and Gill have a working weekend to look forward to. On behalf of the H & B Branch and the regular customers here tonight I would like to wish them both a happy retirement and  an opportunity to enjoy their weekends together in the future. David always thanked his customers for visiting his pub. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their friendly service and for making it such a pleasure to visit the Gate Hangs Well.

David & Gill kindly provided some hot snacks afterwards. Also in attendance was Tom who is taking over the Gate from Monday. It will continue as a Free House - we wish him well with his venture.
