Trip to Parish Brewery Saturday 23rd January 2010
A full minibus set off for Burrough on the Hill, home of the Parish Brewery, intent on presenting the Champion Beer of the Festival award to Barrie Parish for his festival special High Cross Ale (5%). We arrived just after 1pm and met up with Barrie & Trudy next door to the brewery in Grant's the new name for the Stag & Hounds since Barrie recently bought it. It had obviously been refurbished & very smart it was. However what was available at the bar was of more interest to most & they were not disappointed. There was Parish Special Bitter 3.9%, Parish Farm Gold 4.2%, Burrough Bitter 4.8% and last but least the infamous Baz's Bonce Blower 12.0%. This was dispensed from a wooden pin on the bar with its own little cooler and glass ends so the beer could be clearly seen. After a couple of beers, we ordered some baguettes/chips etc. and then adjourned to the brewery for a guided tour from Barrie while the food was prepared. He explained that Parish is one of the older micro breweries having been in existence for about 26 years and gave us an entertaining history of the 20 barrel plant. There was a brew of Baz's Bonce Blower in the fermentation vessel where it would be for about 3 weeks! On our return to the pub, Bill Smith, the organiser of the 2nd Hinckley Beer Festival last September, said a few words of praise for Barrie & his Brewery & then presented the Champion Beer of the Festival certificate. Following lunch there was time for further beer tasting and as departure time approached several members were seen trying halves of Bonce Blower. We finally left Grant's at about 4:15 and headed off for our stopover on the way home at the Cow & Plough, Oadby. The Cow & Plough was up to its usual standard with a good selection of real ales available, including some from Steaming Billy. We had two hours here before leaving for trip home. Our thanks to Barrie & Trudy for their hospitality & to André for driving us.
