Leicester Beer Festival 2009 11 - 14 March at the Charotar Patidar Samaj, Bay Street, Leicester At the time of writing the festival still has one day to go, but it appears it will have been the usual success, possibly breaking some of the records set in previous years. H&B members have been in evidence throughout the set up period & especially during opening times, serving behind one of the three bars. There were 215 beers listed in the programme, plus Ciders & Perries. The theme for this year was the demise of the Great Central Railway, 40 years ago - it used to run from Marylebone in London through Leicester & Nottingham to Sheffield & the north. The railway theme was in evidence in the names of the 16 Festival Specials brewed solely for the festival & there was a large LocAle bar with 80 beers, all brewed within 25 miles of the festival. The Champion Beer of the Festival was Old Spot Brewery Spot O'Bother, a 5.5% Porter - chocolate ice-cream and a slight liquorish bitterness to finish. Runner up was Brewdog Brewery Paradox Isle of Arran & third came Nottingham Brewery Extra Pale Ale a 4.2% golden ale. We ran the minibus to take members over on the Friday evening to help behind the bars. When we arrived at 7pm the venue was already full & queuing round the block. Quite a few beers were already 'Sold Out' and by the end of the evening this had increased considerably. Our congratulations to Keith Williams, Andy Sales & the rest of the Leicester Branch team for laying on another first class festival with an outstanding selection of beers - particularly the LocAle bar.
