Visit to Tunnel
Brewery, Ansley
15th April 2008
A party of 16 members were entertained by Bob Yates &
Mike Walsh at Tunnel Brewery. The brewery is situated behind the Lord Nelson Inn
on Birmingham Road, Ansley and the bus got us there just in time for our 7:30
start time. There was not a lot of walking involved, because, like most micro
breweries it is fairly compact in layout. However, we all gathered round Bob &
Mike for an interesting talk on the history of Tunnel & the beers they brew.
Some of the stories were rumoured to be true, but I'm not so sure; if you can
take the time to visit Tunnel's website (click
here) and read the 'Rumour has it . . ' section on each beer you
will get a flavour of what I mean!
The talk was interrupted many times for tastings of
the beers, including the new beer brewed for Bosworth Battlefield called 'Let
Battle Commence'. There are two more brews in the pipeline, one to be named
after Richard III and one after Henry; we were allowed a sneak preview of each
and jolly good they were. We were also given tastings of a fruit cake, a mustard
& a pickle all made using Tunnel beers.
After profuse thanking of our hosts, the shop was
declared open and most members took advantage of the discounts on offer - one
member going slightly OTT and ordering three barrels! Watch the
News Page for when & where this beer will be
available in a pub near you!
Although they have only been brewing at Tunnel for
the past 3 years, Bob & Mike have a good & varied range beers available - something
for everyone.
Sometime after 9:00pm we all adjourned to the
conveniently positioned Lord Nelson Inn, where we continued to consume the 3
Tunnel beers on permanent offer; Trade Wind, Nelson's Column & OTT, along with
a Church End and others. Some members took the opportunity to sample from the
food menu and were not disappointed!
Once again our thanks to Bob & Mike for their kind
invitation to visit, we look forward to being able to sample their beers within
our area soon and hope that the long term project of a brewery at the
Bosworth Battlefield centre comes to fruition.
