Sheffield Trip

10th June 2008

Nine stout souls assembled at the railway station in time to catch the 09:33 to Leicester, having purchased tickets just to Nottingham (£4.15 return, using bus pass concession!). The first set back came at Leicester where, due to a signalling problem in somewhere like the Outer Hebrides, our little train to Nottingham had been cancelled; still they apologised for the inconvenience caused, so that made it alright. The next train was late; same reason; still they apologised for the inconvenience caused, so that made it alright. By now we had missed two connections at Nottingham where we bought Derbyshire Wayfarer tickets which are valid from Nottingham through to Sheffield (£5.35 concessionary all day travel on trains & buses in Derbyshire). We eventually arrived in Sheffield an hour behind schedule & very thirsty!

We caught the tram out to Bamforth Street & walked down to the New Barrack Tavern, a Tynemill pub, offering a wide selection of beers from 13 handpumps, including some from Castle Rock, Abbeydale & Acorn breweries. There was a session beer, new to me, from the Leeds Brewery, called Leeds Special (3.5%). There were two Milds, one from Titanic & one from Black Friars of Great Yarmouth.

From here it was back to the tram, for one stop only & a visit to the Hillsboro' Hotel. Our luck was in, they had a beer festival the previous weekend & there were still about 12 beers available, that's in addition to the 8 pumps pictured left, including the infamous Thornbridge Jaipur.

Next tram stop was Shalesmoor and the almost compulsory visits to the Fat Cat & Kelham Island Tavern, neither of which disappointed us!
The last call was the Bath Hotel, round the corner from University tram stop.
From the Bath it was a rush back to the Station to find our train was delayed; still they apologised for the inconvenience caused - however we all felt this was now wearing a bit thin.......................!!

Once again Sheffield provided us with a superb selection of traditional pubs and real ales, it's just a pity it's so far away!!
