Newark XIIIth
Beer Festival
23-25 May
2008.
This CAMRA Festival had over 140 real
ales, ciders and country wines. Its location is very nice - by the River Trent
and overlooking the Castle. Interestingly, about 40 of the beers on sale were
Locales – brewed within 20 miles of the town. Tokens, costing £1.20 each, bought
a half of most of them.
Despite the dreadful weather, it was
very well attended by folks of all ages. Many were making a weekend of it. Lots
of ales actually sold out mid-way through Saturday afternoon. Day Passes were
provided, allowing people to also visit the towns several GBG pubs.
(Later, we tried The
Five Bells at Claypole – a great pub with accommodation just over the border
in Lincolnshire. It won a CAMRA Pub of the Year Award in 2007. Here the beers
were about £2.25 a pint – quite a saving Hinckley prices!)
