12th - 15th March 2008 at the Charotar
Patidar Samaj
The 2008 Leicester Beer Festival was ready to open on Wednesday 12th March at 5pm. The first 'activity' was the judging of the Champion Beer of the Festival. Seven of our members took part & eventually the winner was declared to be a LocAle - Grainstore Winter Nip - a barley wine - delicious and very strong (7.3%). There were over 200 beers available, of which almost 50 were classed as LocAle, i.e. brewed within 20 miles of Leicester City Centre. There were also 12 Festival Specials. We were next in attendance on the Friday evening when a minibus of 15 members, plus a few who made their own way there, arrived to help man the bars. Most members worked from 7pm through to closing at 11:30, when we enjoyed an excellent curry as a reward for our efforts. The festival closed at 11pm on the Saturday, by which time most of the beer must have been consumed. Attendance seemed to be up on previous years, particularly on the Friday evening when the venue was full by 8pm with a long queue waiting to get in. The excellent advertising must have paid off; there was a full page article in the Friday Leicester Mercury and also an item on the local television news when Keith Williams, the organiser, was interviewed. Various H&B members were seen to be working at the festival on the Monday of set up, and on most of the days it was open. Our thanks go to them for helping to support Leicester Branch & to promote the H&B sub branch in this way. Alan Cooke
