29th Burton-upon-Trent Beer Festival Report

Friday 19th September 2008

After a busy week with our first Beer Festival, the AGM & Leicester PotM at the Windmill, it was not surprising that only 5 hardy souls turned up for the annual trip to the Burton Festival. There were 114 beers listed, plus Ciders, Perries, continental beers & Fruit Wines. Martin Atterbury was again entertaining on the mighty Wurlitzer. There were many interesting beers to taste & this year all proceeds from the Festival are being donated to help save the Museum of Brewing - ex Bass Museum, currently Coors Visitor Centre - a worthy cause!

A September Sojourn by Les Codrington

I had been advised that the Burton Beer Festival was one of the best, so with my trusty bus pass in hand I set off on a beautiful Friday morning. I made my connection at Coalville & found it quite a pretty journey until Swadlincote & then on to Burton.

The inevitable roadworks meant a premature end to the journey, but the helpful advice of the driver & a fellow drinker, who recognised me from the Hinckley Beer Festival, who pointed out the 'must try' pubs on the way. I joined the queue just behind my friends from Hinckley who had come by train.

The range of beers was quite impressive & easy to find via the overhead signs. of course the famous organ was quite impressive & reminded me of my one & only visit to Blackpool thirty years ago. There were a number of rooms to explore, one of which supplied food. I enjoyed the experience & set off home looking forward to an Italian Restaurant in the evening & another Beer Festival tomorrow!

Saturday was another glorious day but due to time constraints I got a lift to the Storey Arms at Osgathorpe in North Western Territory. An altogether different affair but equally as pleasant as the day before. There weren't as many beers but I renewed acquaintance with Absolution & Yorkshire Terrier as well as some old friends & remembered faces from the year before. The seating was quite plentiful even down to a homely sofa; I wasn't tempted unless my slumbers spoiled a nice day out!
