Thornbridge Brewery Visit - Thursday 22nd March 2007

I do not really know where to start as superlatives seem inadequate for our trip to the Thornbridge Brewery.

How often do you go out on a planned event and things crop up to alter the best laid plans. Well last night was the exception. The coach left on time, complete with two extra guests. We made our way to Loughborough, as arranged, to collect the second group of our party, but the driver, unfortunately, got us there early. This meant that some of us were introduced to the delights of the Swan in the Rushes. It really did get the night off to a flying start, as Castle Rock Beers were sampled. We then met up with our colleagues from Loughborough CAMRA and 35 of us then set off in anticipation. The first and only real problem last night was that some inconsiderate person had a collision on the M1 which impeded our swift progress. Anyway we arrived a few minutes late, having also been sent to a back road, which was unsuitable for motor vehicles, by a trusty Sat Nav. Fortunately, a passenger and mobile phone rectified the situation and we soon found our way to the front entrance.

First impressions, as we drew up to a set of electric gates, wow! We gained entry and drove a good quarter of a mile along a private drive up to the stately house, Thornbridge Hall, where we were met by Alex. After the introductions we were led into the house and down to a bar. This had been completely refurbished and if the lights had been dimmed we could have been in a night club. We were met by Stacey, Simon and Richard who were so happy to allow us to try their wares. This being Jaipur, Hark and a new stout called Connell which has a flavour of vanilla.

The bar

A quick introduction by Alex and off we went to the brew house which currently has a 10 barrel capacity. Planning permission has been applied for, so that an extension can be built to take it up to 30 barrels. After an informative talk from Alex and Simon it was back to the bar. We were then introduced to John, the owner and occupant of Thornbridge Hall.

An amusing and factual history of the Hall was given. To think the owner of the Hall has his own brewery in his back yard, which all started when he was a youth and brewed beer in his mothers airing cupboard. There is hope for us all.

We then carried on talking and drinking until the bar ran dry. But reserves were on hand, bottles of Jaipur.

After numerous photos, time was called, we said our goodbyes and it was back to dull, damp Leicestershire.

It was so refreshing to see people working with so much enthusiasm for their fine products, and they are rightfully proud of their achievements.

It is certainly my intention to go back in daylight to admire the beauty of the House and grounds.

Who knows another trip!

BIG Thanks have to go to Stacey, Simon, Alex, Richard and John for making this dream trip possible and, as I said right at the start, run so smoothly.

Another bonus is that we may have recruited some new members, and Danny from the Hobgoblin in Loughborough is going to try to obtain a barrel of Thornbridge beer to sell in his pub. Good Luck to him.
