Skittles

Tuesday 24th October

A last minute panic - the Heathcote had double booked - found us at the Cross Keys in Barwell to face a challenge issued by Barwell & Earl Shilton Lions. We approached with some trepidation as it was some time since some of our members had taken part in such an intensely active sport, most of us making do with the odd game of darts or cribbage (isn't that something from Harry Potter?).

However we managed, by using that old trick of 'beginners' luck', to win the first game by 47 to 34 and spurred on by our new found talent we also won the second game by 59 to 42. At this point 'over-confidence' kicked in and we lost the third game by 34 to 57. Perhaps it was due to the large portions of excellent fish & chips which, because of the short notice, were brought in from a nearby fish bar and consumed before the game. All that remained was the most important game of the evening, the beer leg. Surely our team of almost professional drinkers could not lose the beer leg! Despite lagging behind for most of the game, we managed to sneak it at the death, winning by 50 to 44. Congratulations to the top scorer of the evening, Hilary with a magnificent 23!

Our thanks to Lisa for organising a most enjoyable event & coping so well with the sudden change of venue, also to the Cross Keys for stepping in at the last minute. I understand a replay is being organised for January.
