Leicester CAMRA Branch Trip To Derbyshire 12th May 07

After departing from Humberstone Gate, Leicester on a dry Saturday morning at 10am we were off to our first destination accompanied by extremely inclement weather. Undeterred, our jovial band of travellers passed the time singing to the tune of Tigers Tigers (what a win!}.

On arrival in Glossop we set off in different directions to sample five GBG pubs. This was made easier with maps supplied by our organiser K Slattery (well done Keith}.

First port of call was “The Friendship” where we had a taste of Robinsons Bitter. On to “The Star”, sampling Otter Ale.4.5%

Next “The Old Glove Works” which was an old glove mill where some members actually partook of solids for lunch. Copper Dragon one of many on tap. Entering “The Crown Inn” one is immediately reminded this Samuel Smiths 1846 hostelry has traditional tastes – and the Sam Smiths is only £1.35 a pint! Last call for me was “The Globe”, a micro serving a good range including Eclipse 4.3, Amber 3.8, Meteor 4.3, Silver King 4.5, almost all priced at £2.00. A real gem and a pub I would like as my local.

Off to Hayfield and “The Royal Hotel”, ( I cannot remember the beer KW bought this one!) The rain was torrential but the downpour did not seem to dampen the spirit of the locals who persevered with their carnival day.

Journeying on we descended in to Ashover. Some ventured into the village but I never got past The Old Poets Corner {see Norman and Andie’s Trip to Derbyshire at hinckleyandbosworthcamra.org.uk} As always, a comprehensive range was on offer.

After tasting Kelham Gold, Tower, Coopers, Ashover Mild and World Gold we were off next to Horsley Woodhouse and “The Old Oak Inn”, a Leadmill House. They offer a good range here including Full Moon, .Mash Tun and Rompage.

Our last stop was in Smalley at “The Bell Inn”, a local CAMRA pub of the year 2006. On sale was Thornbridge Jaipur and, last but not least, Apologies and Mind Boggled . . . . .
