Visit to Derbyshire - Saturday 31st March

“Flying Childers”, Stanton in the Peak

After a brisk ( if bracing) walk across Stanton Moor and a look at the Nine Ladies stone circle it was down to the “Flying Childers” for lunch and a pint. We were ready for the open fires and friendly welcome from the landlord. The warmth of the homemade leek, potato and stilton soup complimented the well-kept ale. This pleasant, traditional local is well worth a visit.

Beers on tap:
 Theakstones “Black Sheep”,
 Wells “Bombadier”,
Church End “What the Foxes Hat”
all at £2.35 a pint.

On to Old Poets' Corner”, Ashover

Formerly the Red Lion Inn, this pub was renamed when the present owner took over – an intriguing choice of name stemming from the location on a corner(!), the village poet Leonard Wheatcroft, the previous pub of the landlord ( the Dead Poets) and the fact that the resident chef they inherited played in a band called the Poets!

Home to Ashover Brewery, a 3 1/2 barrel brew plant, the pub had 2 really good home-brewed ales on tap – Poets’ Tipple And Light Rale at £2.00 a pint. The pub also had a further 6 real ales on tap including –

Gale  “Festival”
Titanic “Anchor”
Tower “Summer Equinox”
Timothy Taylor “Landlord”
Whem “Hartington”
Phoenix “White Monk”
Greene King “Abbot”
Church End “What the Foxes Hat”
Prices varied  - (see chalk board photo)

CAMRA pub of the year for real ciders and perries last year, the pub obviously carried a good range at lethal strengths ( Andie had to sample those).

Good B&B – we’ll definitely be going back
