THE ONE AND ONLY DOG AND HEDGEHOG PUB, DADLINGTON, IS NOW SECURE AS ITS DOORS RE-OPEN!

The Dog & Hedgehog springs into life as it reopens its doors on Monday 16 May 2011, after a closure of three years. Residents of Dadlington village assumed that it would re-open quickly as it had been a popular local facility for over 200 years. The name Dog & Hedgehog according to The History of sign-boards, 1866, was a very uncommon name, with the Dadlington Inn the only known listing. An update still does not reveal any other pub of this name. It was said to relate to the famous engraving of a “rough customer” of the 19th century with the dog giving the hedgehog a wide berth.

It was unthinkable to local residents that the building could be ignored and left to deteriorate but that seemed to be the case. The villagers fought hard for three years to try and keep its doors open.

The new owners, Bill Reinking and Robert Marko, will resume business as before. Bill said:

what attracted me to The Dog were the beautiful views and seeing such a historic building and gardens being neglected. I immediately wanted to save it and give it some “TLC” and bring it back to the community.”

Both Bill and Robert have extensive experience in the restaurant sector and understanding of this market. Robert as general manager in London and Bill with his own restaurants in Oxford, and eighteen years in London.

Having undergone a sympathetic refurbishment by the owners themselves, this wonderful historical building retains the level of charm and character befitting such an establishment. Local resident Graham Grimley said:

“I was concerned that any future owners would be sympathetic to the history of the building and the challenge of dealing with a small and, at times, quirky community. I think I can speak for most in saying that the way Bill and Robert have launched themselves into local life bodes very well for the future of The Dog as a local pub and also as a most attractive venue for the wider population, most of whom, have a special affinity to this lovely country pub.

Local businessman John Walliker, proprietor of the Ambion Court Hotel, also said:

the re-opening of the pub has been a long time coming and we are very pleased for the village that it has its heart back. We are pleased that we can compliment The Dog and the area.”

Real ale, great pub food, incorporating fresh, local and seasonal produce, and a warm welcome await visitors to The Dog & Hedgehog. To complement your meal, or for a superb evening without the food, an extensive array of wines and real ale is served at the bar by their  friendly and attentive staff in Dadlington. The Dog & Hedeghog can be contacted on 01455 213151.
