New 'Real Ale Pubs in our Area' page added to our website.
This replaces the old style map page with a flag for each pub. The pub data on the new page is extracted from a database containing all the information we hold about pubs. This should result in the data being updated more easily and therefore not being as out of date as was previously the case. However, the new database still requires some work, particularly with regard to the beers sold. If you can help with any additions or corrections, please let me know by email.
You can access the new page by going to the Pubs Section and choosing 'Real Ale Pubs' from the left hand menu.

60 Members Attend Branch AGM

On Tuesday 1st November 60 members attended Hinckley & Bosworth CAMRA’s AGM, held at Club of the Year, the Ashby Road Sports Club Hinckley. The Club is run by CAMRA members Ian and Carolyn Turner. Ian provided some super ales including LocAle Belvoir Beaver Bitter, Blue Monkey BG Tips and Abbeydale Absolution.
Carolyn served complimentary hot food with a six choice menu appreciated by all.
East Midlands Regional Director Julian Tubbs addressed the meeting. He praised the efficient way in which the branch is run. The turnout of 60 reflects H&B’s great level of active support from its 327 members.
We look forward to seeing Julian again when the next East Midlands Regional Meeting takes place on 26th November at our Pub of the Year the New Plough Hinckley.

The primary purpose of the AGM is to elect officers for the coming year. With the exceptions of the Treasurer and Young Members Coordinator all officers and co-opted members stood again unopposed and were, therefore, re-elected. Geoff, our able Treasurer for the past 5 years, decided to relinquish the position and was replaced by Bethan Moore who was unopposed. Helen, our Young Members Coordinator, stood down due to an impending move out of our area. As yet a replacement has not been found and the post remains vacant.

Leicester gets another real ale pub
On Saturday 13th August, another real ale pub was added to the Leicester circuit. This is now the third pub in the city to turn to real ale more prominently this year. The Gatehouse on Churchgate has reverted back to its former name The Longstop and now boasts 6 handpumps. After being closed for two years, the pub has been refurbished and is run by Hugh Kerr, formerly of the Globe in Silver St.
On opening night, the six handpumps had Castle Rock - Preservation and Screech Owl,  Marstons Draught Bass, Dancing Duck - Gold, Hop Back - Taiphoon and Kelham Island - Pale Rider. All were in excellent condition and all £2.60 a pint. When Hugh is more settled in, he will be offering a 20p a pint discount to CAMRA Members on production of their Membership Card.
This has now created a new real ale area in Leicester in the Clock Tower / St Margaret's Bus Station area with the excellent Salmon very close by on Butt Close Lane which increased its range to six handpumps earlier this year. Also turning to real ale with three handpumps is the Bridle Lane Tavern near Belgrave Flyover.
This is great news for real ale drinkers in Leicester and Leicester CAMRA wish Hugh and the others all the very best. We also look forward to the Globe re-opening on Monday.
Cheers Keith
Williams (Leicester Branch Chairman)

Beer duty: MPs want Osborne to help the brewers
It's hardly surprising that the MP for 'the home of British brewing' should be urging the Chancellor to relax beer duty. But the Conservative MP for Burton and Uttoxeter, Andrew Griffiths, is convinced his numbers make sense; that the beer duty escalator is an expensive way for the Government to raise money.
Significantly, more than 100 other MPs have agreed with him by signing his Parliamentary motion.

Under the title Marston's Beer Company, Marston's PLC operate 5 breweries:
Marston's Brewery in Burton upon Trent
Park Brewery in Wolverhampton
Jennings Brewery at Cockermouth
Wychwood Brewery in Witney
Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire

Marston's pubs dominate the drinker's choice in Hinckley and some surrounding villages. This used to mean the choice was usually Pedigree or Burton Bitter, however, the choice is now often extended to include beers from the other breweries in the group. Each of the five breweries also produce monthly guest or seasonal beers which can also often be found in the pubs.

It is not practical to try to identify which beers and guests each pub is offering, so it is either a matter of searching for the beer you want, which may require visiting numerous pubs or, far less fun, ringing round the pubs. The phone numbers are in our 'Real Ale Pubs' section of the website.

If you are a CAMRA member, don't forget to submit Beer Scores for the pubs you visit. It only takes a moment and you are helping with the selection process for our entries in the Good Beer Guide
